Benjamin Netanyahu helped create [and] popularise the idea of 'Islamic terrorism' (David Miller 2024)
No he didn't (The Author, 2026)
One of the most dangerous activities of the modern era is the earnest academic with a theory which denies historic reality, and which is presented in the most eloquent and also obtuse terms, such that it becomes impenetrable and unarguable, not because of its rationality, but because of the sheer weight of verbal complexity as only an academic can create. A good example is disgraced English academic Professor David Miller - formerly of the universities of Strathclyde, Bath and Bristol (2004-2021) - who promoted the idea that Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invented the concept of "Islamic Terrorism" at a Washington conference in 1984. The fact is, Islamic terrorism dates from 622AD when Arab trader and would-be preacher / prophet Mohammad moved from Mecca to Medina and, as part of his development of an Islamic ideology which involved politics, religion and prescribed cultural appropriation, began slaughtering Jewish tribes and individuals - termed Infidels - who refused to submit and become Muslim. The terrorism of Mohammad was formalised within his ideology under the term jihad and specifically throughout his teachings as published in the Qur'an from 656AD and more than a century later in the Hadith, official biographies and the corresponding implementation of Shariah law.
This jihad-based Islamic terrorism all took place some 1,400+ years prior to Miller's claim of invention of the concept by a future Prime Minister of Israel. The significance and idiocy of Miller's claim is therefore profound, as it continues to be promoted as fact in 2026 by those associated with the Free Palestine movement, by anti-Zionists, and by haters of both Israel and the United States, specifically Netanyahu and President Donald Trump. Miller's presentation of the idea at a conference supported by the Islamic state of Iran is telling as to the origin and promotion of his extreme ideas. As we know from the events of 2026, Iran had been sponsoring Islamic terrorism since 1979, both singularly and through its sponsorship of terrorist groups such as HAMAS, Hezbollah, ISIS and al-Qaeda.
The following article looks in detail at Miller's claims and debunks them with historical facts. Since his dismissal from the University of Bristol in 2021 following accusations of anti-Semitism, he has worked in the field of geriatrics, whilst still pursuing his anti-Zionist activities. A request from Google AI regarding this latter issue returns the following summary information:
David Miller, a sociologist formerly of the University of Bristol, argues that the concept of "Islamic terrorism" was invented and popularized by Zionist intellectuals and the Israeli state, rather than being an inherent phenomenon. According to Miller, this narrative was developed to serve political agendas, specifically to counteract rising criticism of Zionism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Miller contends that the idea of a specifically "Muslim form of terrorism" was introduced at conferences in the early 1980s, notably a 1984 conference in Washington DC organized by Benjamin Netanyahu. The aim was to shift the focus away from the Arab-Israeli conflict and toward a new "global" threat, framing Muslim groups as inherently prone to violence. Miller argues that because Zionism necessitated the displacement of Palestinians to create a Jewish state, it required an anti-Arab and, consequently, anti-Muslim ideology, making the Zionist lobby a key player in the "Islamophobia industry". He argues that the concept links regional issues (like the PLO or HAMAS) with global extremism (like al-Qaeda or ISIS) to de-legitimize Palestinian resistance, a strategy promoted through Zionist lobbying. Miller's views are part of his broader research on propaganda, public diplomacy, and what he describes as the "transatlantic Islamophobia network".

In a 26 March 2026 interview on the Press TV - Iran channel, Miller's attitude regarding Iran was even more extreme, stating that: "Only the Islamic Republic of Iran can save the world's civilization."

Conclusion
David Miller is an extremist. His support for Islam, for Islamic terrorism supporting and sponsoring nations such as Iran, and anti-Semitism is very public and consistent since the 1990s through to the present day. In the view of the present writer, his rewriting of history and contemporary commentary sets a dangerous precedent, as his status as a former university professor carries weight in the social media sphere, where misinformation / disinformation can go viral and feeds popularist movements such as Free Palestine and anti-Israel and anti US / Trump feeling, especially amongst the Left of the West. The present writer was shocked when Miller was first encountered in mid' April 2026, due to the unapologetic and emphatic nature of his statements.
Benjamin Netanyahu helped create the idea of 'Islamic terrorism'? No. Did he help promote it? Yes. Why? Because since the creation of the state of Israel was first raised in the early 1900s and supported by the Balfour Declaration of 1917, Arab Muslims and others have actively and violently opposed the idea, killing Jews both in the Middle East and around the world in protest, but also as a continuation of the Islamic genocide of Jews which has been in place since 622AD. With the people of the state of Israel in a defensive state of war since 1948 - a fact ignored or denied by many in the West, including David Miller - it is no wonder that leaders such as Benjamin Netanyahu feel they are tasked with protecting the people of the multicultural state of Israel. The relentless, Islamic ideology-driven opposition to the very existence of Israel is obvious and can only be dealt with in one way by Israel, namely, an aggressive defence and proactive securing of its borders through incursions into surrounding areas from which attacks on them are launched, such as in Jordan, Gaza and elsewhere within the Middle East. This in no way condones the actions by Israel in killing innocent people. However, they have no option in order to survive, and the fact of modern warfare is that collateral damage affecting innocent civilians is becoming more common, on all sides of any conflict. This situation will never end unless Islam agrees to leave the state of Israel and Israelis to live in peace. Once they stop, then everything will change in regards to Middle East conflicts, though Muslims will continue to fight amongst themselves, no doubt.
