For Muslims the Qur'an ["recital"] is the infallible word of God.

Q: Nick Shirley: Why are so many people in the United States converting to Islam?

Ans.: Somali Muslim man, Minneapolis: It is the fastest growing religion in the world, and no one can stop it .... It is the best and the final religion to humanity.

Somali Muslim woman, Minneapolis: ... Because of the Qur'an. Our book never changes. (Shirley 2025)

1. Introduction

The Koran is the Muslim Bible (Lewis & Churchill 2008).

Judaism has the Old Testament of the Bible and the Torah; Christianity has the Bible; Buddhism has the teachings of Buddha and sutras; Mormons have the Bible and the Joseph Smith's Book of Mormon ...... the list could go on in regards to spiritual texts which are said to contain the teachings of God and the wisdom of the ages. All spiritual practices in modern times (i.e., since writing began circa 5,000 years ago) have a textual basis which prescribes behaviour, though for thousands of years prior to the invention of the written word Indigenous societies pursued such things without the need for text. This included, for example, the Australian Aborigines who developed a monotheistic religion often referred to as the Dreamtime.

The primary texts of the three Abrahamic religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam - all pursue different themes, whilst including historical, sociological and philosophical material. The Old Testament speaks of the coming Messiah; the New Testament primarily speaks of peace, love and compassion through the word of God in the temporary human form of Jesus Christ; the Islamic Qur'an focuses on the fear of, and therefore obedience towards, their God referred to as Allah and his prophet Muhammad, with the teachings of the latter expanded upon through a corpus of biographical works known as the Hadith.

Whilst all the Christian and Jewish texts contain elements which are stated to be "the word of God", such as the delivery of the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount, it is only the Qur'an which claims to be such in toto, having been received by Muhammad directly from God through the Angel Gabriel. It also claims to be the final teaching of God, and therefore overrides all those that came before it, including the Torah, the Bible and the teachings of Buddah. Islam also rejects statements in the New Testament that Jesus was God, which is core to Christianity. To Muslims Jesus was simply a human. As such there are significant differences between the religions which form the basis of Western and Asian societies, and that of Islam. These differences give rise to conflict in everyday interactions, outside of the church, the mosque and the temple.

Between November 2025 and February 2026 the present writer read the N.J. Dawood English translation of the Koran - referred to hereinafter as the Qur'an (Dawood 1956). The book is stated to be the word of God / Allah given directly to the Arab preacher and warlord Muhammad ibn Abdullah (born c.570AD) through the Angel Gabriel in dreams and in a cave at Mecca between 610-632AD. Elements of the text was written down during the lifetime of Muhammad - who was illiterate - and compiled after his death from his oral testimony and the memory of his followers. It took its present form two decades later, around 656AD. The Qur'an comprises some 114 chapters, or Surah, and forms the foundation of Islamic teachings, ideology, and law as in Shariah. These teachings were subsequently added to a century and a half later by a significant collection of biographical material and commentaries known in combination as the Hadith. The latter are also included in Shariah.

In reading the 400 page long Qur'an, writer started at the end (surah 114) with the shorter chapters, before moving on the the longer ones from the beginning (surah 1). As a result, surah 114 to 39 were studied in reverse order before a reading of surah 1 through to 38 was undertaken. This is important, for reasons outlined below. Relevant lines and paragraphs were highlighted during the reading, and annotations made. A number of those annotations and comments are presented below, alongside the relevant surah text. The commentary is a critical assessment comparing and contrasting it with that of Christianity and Buddhist, reflecting the beliefs and knowledge of the present writer. Each is presented as follows:

It should be noted that scholars from the Alliance of Former Muslims have identified 26 different Arabic versions of the Qur'an currently in existence around the world, with some 45,377 differences between them (Shirley 2025). Therefore, the content of the Qur'an, especially in translations, is very flexible. As Dawood's English translation dates from 1956 and is the most common of all such translations, it was considered the most appropriate to make use of. A more recent version was also consulted to ensure that the meaning was consistent. However, as the original Qur'an was presented in Arabic and verse (poem) form, some have rejected any translation as false. Muhammad received his initial contact with the Angel Gabriel in 610AD. As he continued to receive teachings from God / Allah via Gabriel through to his death in 632AD, he presented them to his followers and they were initially written down by them in the form of poetry, forming the origins of the Qur'an which appeared during his lifetime and which was finally brought together in its present-day form by 656AD.

The Taliban in Afghanistan is taking ordinary, orthodox Islam ideology literally; it is not a "radical" interpretation.

2. Qur'an Quotes

In the following, quotes from the Qur'an are initially presented, followed by comments from the present author, who was raised a Catholic but also follows the teachings of the Buddha. These quotes have been selected in answer to the promotion of Islam as a "religion of peace" and the passage of Hate Speech laws in Australia during January 2026, which in large part reflect away from aspects of Islam which by their very nature incite hatred and violence against innocent people (Infidels). Whilst there is material of a religious nature within the Qur'an, the substantive elements which are doctrinal ideology and not of a spiritual nature often override the more enlightened elements. As such, they cannot, and should not, be ignored, as they are when referred to as elements of "extreme" Islam. They are, in fact, core to Islam and orthodox as such.

* [Hatred and violence] 111: 1-5 - Perish the hands of the Father of Flame! Perish he! No profit to him from all his wealth, and all his gains! Burnt soon will he be in a Fire of Blazing Flame! His wife shall carry the (crackling) wood - As fuel! - A twisted rope of palm-leaf fibre round her (own) neck!

Comment: This is an example of the hatred and violence promulgated throughout the Qur'an, and in this instance directed towards Muhammad's uncle and one of his staunchest opponents. It is presented as the words of God, seeking to not only punish this man and his wife (through hanging) on earth, but also in the afterlife through eternal suffering in the flames of Hell.

* [Aggression] 109: 1-6 - Say : O ye that reject Faith! I worship not that which ye worship, Nor will ye worship that which I worship. And I will not worship that which ye have been wont to worship, Nor will ye worship that which I worship. To you be your Way, and to me mine.

Comment: This displays the aggressive nature of the language of the God of the Qur'an. In this instance it is applied to the lack of acceptance of, or respect for, diversity of religious belief. Any belief in anything other than Islam is to result in punishment.

* [Allah's vengefulness] 108:3 - He that hates you shall remain childless.

Comment: This is evidence of the very human-like revengeful nature of the God of the Qur'an, punishing those who do not follow, or agree with, Muhammad and his teachings as provided to him from God via the Angel Gabriel. Such a nature was not seen in the actions of Jesus Christ during his period on Earth, or in his teachings.

* [Slavery] 16:71 Inequality between free people as slaves as a given; 30:28 Ownership of slaves as an everyday event; 24:33 permits forced labour; 2:221 ranks a Muslim slave above an Infidel.

Comment: Nowhere in the Qur'an does it denounce slavery (Khan 2026). "Those whom your right hand possessed....." Islam never abolished slavery, and it is still supported, viz. Taliban 2026.

* [Sexual slavery] 23:5-6 and 70: 29-30 Permits sexual access to enslaved women; 4:24 Allows sex with enslaved women even if married.

Comment: Women were identified as concubines (sexual slaves) and freely acquired or sold.

* [Education of women] 33:33 Women to remain in the home and under male authority.

Comment: There is no Qur'an statement that women should be educated.

* [Women under male control, subservient, treated as property]: 4:34 Men are the caretakers of women, as men have been provisioned by Allah over women .....

Comment: The Qur'an and Islam denied women legal person-hood (Khan 2026).

3. Hadith quotes

The hadith form a voluminous collection of biographical works on the life and teachings of Muhammad, published more than a century after the death of the prophet.

* [Kill all Dogs] Sahih Muslim 1572 (Book of Hunting and Slaughter, Hadith on dogs):

The Messenger of Allah (Muhammad) ordered that dogs be killed.

3. Comments

The reading of the Qur'an is a revelation, especially for a person raised in the Catholic faith - though lapse - and living in the West, plus also having taken up the teachings of the Buddha since the turn of the new millennium. The Qur'an comes across as a text promoting fear; fear of God and fear of disobeying any of the teachings of God given to Muhammad. The God therein is an entity very different from the Judaeo-Christian God whose primary message was one of peace, love and compassion, which was in turned extended by others such as Buddha. The Islamic God is one which preaches - demands - fear and displays human traits such as envy, revenge, greed, misogyny, support for paedophilia, racism, sexism, brutality and lack of respect for the basic "human" rights which exist in Western societies largely based upon Christian teachings. The present writer was shocked by what he read in the Qur'an, and now holds a reasonable fear of the teachings of the Islamic ideology and actions arising therein. "Jihad of the sword" is merely one of the negative outcomes of the teachings of Muhammad. It is a fact that many of these have been, and continue to be, hidden from the West, with the ultimate aim to dominate the world with a global caliphate of Islamic states operating under a severe application of its ideology through a system of law know as Sharia.

4. Islam &fear

If they had gotten rid of the apostasy punishment, Islam wouldn't exist today... Islam would have ended with the death of the prophet [Muhammad in 632AD] (Iman, quoted in Alliance of Former Muslims 2026)

Islam is the most persistent adversary of the West. Israel is not. The West has a lot to fear from Islam, and nothing to fear from Israel and other groups such as those labelled Infidels within Islam. Israel's position is primarily defensive and pre-emptive, whilst Islam's position is primarily aggressively offensive, going back more than fourteen centuries to 622AD when it first sought world domination through the creation of caliphates as Islamic States operating under Islamic law known as Sharia. Since the origin of Islam, Jewish people en masse have been attacked, declared infidels, killed, raped, imprisoned, tortured and otherwise aggressively pursued and driven off their lands by Muslims. Jews are indigenous to the Middle East and areas such as Palestine. Since its official formation in 1948 by the United Nations, the state of Israel has been under attack from Islam, and has therefore existed in a defensive mode. Because they have nowhere else to go, they have aggressively fought back against this Islamic aggression. This needs to be remembered when people are talking about Islam and declaring it a "religion of peace". History tells us otherwise. Israel is criticized by the West and others, especially the Left for the fourteen centuries of aggressive attack by Islam and its opposition to any Jewish nation state. Groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas and Al-Qaeda have led these attacks and participated in terrorism during recent times. But the fact is Islam has had this so-called radical posture since its very origin. Why? Because the aggressive nature of Islam is enshrined deep within the Qur'an. And it has been enshrined in the activities of Muhammad and his followers since 622 AD, never changing. This posture has never stopped, and will remain whilst the core tenants of Islamic ideology remain. Australians have nothing to fear from Israel, and a lot to fear from Islam and Muslims who care to carry out its teachings to the degree that they engage in jihad and terrorist attacks against innocent people to see as Infidels and a threat to Islam. That is a fact. That is a fact of history. And it is an even more a fact following the events of the Bondi Beach massacre in 2025, following on similar events back in 1915 with the Broken Hill Massacre of 1 January of that year by two Afghan Muslims.
