1. A hard working band

Free was one of the busiest, most hard working live English rock bands during their initial period of rise to fame and international exposure between 1968 through to 1971. It has been stated that they did some 700 gigs during their lifetime, and some 480 are listed below. More comprehensive listings are available via the Free Appreciation Society newsletters. The present listing was provided to the author by Linda Crawford the the Paul Kossoff - The Legend Facebook site during August 2024. It is in most part brief, primarily without any reference to other bands associated with the gig. Some of these, along with information regarding recordings, can be found in the present author's blog Free Live! There exist a variety of performance types within the list, beginning with early pub and university campus gigs, through to stand-alone concert tours and local (British) and international rock festivals.

The band initially broke up in May 1971 and reformed at the beginning of 1972 for a brief period. Bass player and keyboardist Andy Fraser departed in the middle of 1972 due to musical differences, and Paul Kossoff at the end of that year due to health problems, in part brought on by heavy drug use. Singer Paul Rogers and drummer Simon Kirke carried on with new bass player Tetsu Yamauchi and keyboardist John "Rabbit" Bundrick. Free played its final gigs are part of an American tour during January-February 1973. Later that year Rogers and Kirke formed Bad Company; Kossoff performed solo and with his own band Back Street Crawler; and Fraser also pursued various solo projects. All told there were four incarnations of Free

  1. Mark 1 - Andy Fraser, Simon Kirke, Paul Kossoff and Paul Rogers. Duration: April 1968 - May 1971;
  2. MK2 - brief reunion of the original band. Duration: January - July 1972;
  3. MK3 - final departure of Fraser, brief presence of Kossoff, plus inclusion of Tetsu and Rabbit. Duration: September - December 1972;
  4. MK4 - Rogers, Kirke, Tetsu and Rabbit. Duration: January - February 1973.

During their career, Free performed in the following countries: Australian, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Scotland, Switzerland, United States, Wales.

2. Gig guide

The following listing in arranged chronologically from oldest to youngest. There are a number of contentious items included in various lists (e.g. two American performances following the "final" Sydney, Australia gig of 9 May 1971), and cancelled shows have also been noted occasionally, especially where reasons are available, such as health and other issues with Paul Kossoff.

All locations are in England, unless otherwise noted.
