1. Introduction

The following is a listing of recorded live performances by the original Free - the classic English rock band - comprising Paul Rodgers (vocals), Paul Kossoff (guitar), Andy Fraser (bass) and Simon Kirke (drums). The band played its first gig on 19 April 1968 at the Nag's Head Pub, Battersea, England, and their last performance was at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney, Australia, on Sunday, 9 May 1971. They later reformed in 1972 for a brief period. However, due to his worsening drug addiction, Kossoff found it difficult to perform live and by the end of that year he and Fraser were no longer part of Free. They were replaced by Tetsu on bass and Rabbit on keyboards, and recorded and performed through to 1973. Also included below are links to their studio recordings, including remastered material, and various documentaries on aspects of the band history and its individual members, along with some pre-Free blues rock material from Kossoff's Black Cat Bones. Some 68 different studio and live songs by Free between 1968-73 have been officially released, according to a Wikipedia listing, though a number of bootlegs are also available with additional, unlisted tracks.

The following is a Guitar World description of the song and video by Neville Marten: My Brother Jake (Released 23rd April 1971) deserves a place on any ‘greatest pop/rock songs ever’ list. Penned by Fraser and Rodgers, it gave the former a chance to show off his excellent piano chops. Kossoff plays delightful rhythm throughout the song, which Fraser set in the home key of E. Kossoff often used unusual chord shapes - most likely gleaned from his six years of classical guitar training - like a full C-shaped barre chord B/E at the 11th fret, or a 9th-fret F#m7 over Fraser’s B bass to create a gospel style B11. It’s so measured and ‘right’ against Fraser’s beautiful piano work and again shows four musicians in perfect harmony. Rodgers’ vocal is, as always, sublime. There’s no solo as such but Kossoff’s Strat (it was a Strat in the available film footage) delivers tasty, clean neck-pickup fills during the early verses, switching to Hendrix-style licks and runs for the bridge to perfectly compliment what Fraser is doing on piano and bass. Towards the finish the clean guitars give way to typical top-of-the neck bends drenched in distortion and reverb. Fabulous stuff! My Brother Jake is unlike anything else Free recorded. Yet it’s clearly a band performance with probably the rhythm track played live and overdubs added later. But, you know, a song like this is almost too good for a mere music journo to unpick. So why not sit back and listen, marvelling at what these four guys, all between 18 and 21 years of age, pulled out of the hat more than half a century ago.
